On March 21st, exactly at the beginning of spring, astrologers celebrate the International Astrology Day. This day was created by AFAN in 1993 to remind people that Astrology is the oldest symbolic system of western culture still alive.

A small quote from afan.org:

International Astrology Day was founded by AFAN in 1993, an outgrowth of the “Astrology Awareness Weekends” which AFAN had sponsored for several years previously. The goals of the new holiday were to expand networking opportunities among the astrological community, to direct media attention to positive aspects of astrology, and to help raise funds for local astrological groups and for AFAN’s legal, media, and other networking projects.

It is an annual holiday celebrated by astrologers and astrology enthusiasts. It is seen by astrologers as the beginning (first day) of the astrological year. It is the first full day of the astrological sign of Aries and thus marks the beginning of the tropical Zodiac.

The date of the holiday occurs at the same time of the Iranian new year (Norouz), which is celebrated in many places throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. It also corresponds with the beginning of the Bahá’í calendar, which is celebrated as Bahá’í Naw-Rúz. Other holidays occurring around this time include Ostara (amongst neopagans), Chunfen in China, and Vernal Equinox Day (a public holiday in Japan), among others.

At this day the Association For Astrological Networking (AFAN) co-ordinates astrological lectures and events around the world. Local astrology groups also participate. For anyone wanting to publicize their International Astrology Day event, or to find out about local events there is also a frequently updated, online list of International Astrology Day Events for 2009.
